We finished the video for disability awareness awhile back but we are waiting for the responses from the teacher and parents for it to be approved. Going through this project we realized how much time and effort would have to go into this. From filming, to editing, to getting multiple people's opinions and permission. Though there has been some difficult parts, it was all definitely worth it to spread awareness. We are hoping to continue making these videos through the rest of the year. When we have study hall, we plan to take the videos or help edit it. What I Have LearnedThis disability awareness project gave me a different perspective. We got to sit down with kids with disabilities and talk to them and learn from them. Being able to hear what they're interested about and how they want to be treated was amazing to listen to. I realized that a lot of people talk down to them, but they really are humans. Just like us.

This is what the iMovie looks like when it starts. Our slogan is "Just Be Nice." We had calm introduction music in the background. When we started talking and explaining on why we were doing this video, we had to put captions at the bottom because the sound wasn't working the best. Here's a little screenshot on the caption of us describing Disability Awareness. We have filmed two students and are putting together a video for one of them. Putting together the video has taken us a couple of weeks because we were finishing the letters for Random Acts of Kindness. Once we finished that, we had to crop certain parts of the video and add a video of us explaining on what we are doing. We finished editing it but we had to send it to her parents and the resource teacher to make sure it's okay. If they don't approve it, we will either change it or do a different student. If they approve it, then we will send it to the NP120 host to post to let all the students see the video.
Mr. Large provided us with an amazing video camera to start filming the videos. We practiced a few times to make sure we could hear and see clearly. The flash on the camera could've hurt their eyes, so we decided to turn that off. It took us a couple of times to make sure the audio was working. We have to talk loud, get a little closer and turn the volume all the way up. We will start videotaping very soon and I am excited to see how this turns out!
The StartCompared to the Random Acts of Kindness blog, this one is brand new this year. At the beginning of the year, Kendall Mann, Liz Roth and I were bouncing ideas off each other. Liz has a brother named Jake and he was diagnosed with autism. Liz noticed that many people talked down to students like these. They weren't seeing them as equals, but less. Our goal for this project is to change everyone's perspective about people with disability. We want everyone to see them as equals. Proposal and Pitch DayWhen we talked in front of the class and administrators about this idea, all of them seem intrigued. Our slogan for this is "just be nice." It honestly doesn't take a lot of time and effort to be nice to people around you. We want to teach students on how to respectfully interact with those who have a disability. We want those who have disabilities to feel more welcome in the community. For this to be accomplished, we are going to post videos through NP 120, start clubs and hang posters around the school. Some of our resources are Mrs Westerman, the resource teacher, Mr. Burk for NP 120 and parents of the kids in the resource rooms. How to Start this ProjectWe had Mrs. Westerman send out permission slips to see if the kids are allowed to be in a video we are making. We would make these videos during class (homeroom or service learning). If we went virtual, we would have the parents take the videos and send them in. Once we finish making the video, we would contact other administrators for them to show the videos to the younger schools. This is the form we sent out to the parents.
